i first met gold while photographing

my first drag show in seoul

she was one of the first people that received me with open arms and an open smile

there’s a certain unity in meeting other foreigners when you’re living so far away from your original home. the differences between people are always smaller, we share a common energy and a common world view that makes people feel closer right away.

her artistry and confidence on stage

was magnetic and mesmerizing.

(we also started nerding out right away about our common love for cinema and got excited to create art together in a near future)

so when pride month came around and i started offering these queer portraits for free in seoul, i was so excited she was one of the poeple that signed up for it right away.

at that time, remeeting in a different setting, we talked a lot about the phase she was in… a stepback from the stage to look at her life from the outside, a sort of a rebirth… of herself, her job, her view on the world…

we shared songs, views on romantic relationships and little teas about crushes, how it feels to try and date as a queer foreigner in korea, confidence and sexual power… our connection to the ocean, the origin of her name ‘gold’, the character she sees in herself when she embraces that name… and we finally got to these photos.

it was a challenging shoot, late september, the water was cold, there were a lot of people on the beach staring at us… but we had our music, we had our ideas… and we had a lot of fun.
